Is Your Fire Door a Good Smoke Check Door?

The recent spite of events has always raised eyebrows about the effectiveness of the use of fire safety equipment and the maintenance of a building.

The subject is complex and inconclusive as it could be a set of factors working against the basic firefighting requirement. In the entire scheme of accidents, one major factor that has been identified and has been a subject of concern is Smoke.

Data shows that most of the deaths due to fire accidents are due to Smoke Inhalation.

Smoke does Kill!
The only way one can stop the spread of smoke in addition to fire is the use of the right fire door with proper sealing.

Fire-rated or non-fire rated door, there is a serious consideration required for creating smoke check at various levels and compartments.

Fire door frames made of Steel have a major benefit in integrating solutions that are reliable and long-lasting.

Whereas, Frames with Grooved profiles (Also known in the industry as Kerf Frames) have one distinct advantage in controlling both cold smoke and hot gases from spreading.

There is an alternative solution to have surface seals on some of the frame profiles. This has been a standard practice with some manufacturers in order to provide smoke control.

However, the downside of this solution is its very existence on the frame. These seals often go missing once the buildings are handed over due to multiple reasons.

In a Grooved Frame, seals are inserted and are difficult to pull out, unlike the Face-fixed seals.

Good compartmentation of the occupancy should not be limited to fire but most importantly the spread of smoke for effective management of the fire accidents and early evacuation of the building.

Quick Hormann Tip
Hormann fire seals come with a three-chamber profile, giving you an additional sound absorption and tight fixing with a four-sided fin.
